Actos or Glucovance?

Question:

Actos is a very low dosage of a drug related to resulin which itself has ha long history of liver toxicity.  So far, there have been no reports of liver toxocicity in people taking actos. I have been happier taking Actos than Amaryl which i was taking.  Amaryl is a Sulfonylurea like the Glyburide portion of Glucovance.  I have my concerns about long term treatments for T2 (i was diagnosed at age 28) that involve purposely elevating insulin levels. That why i switched to Actos.  I waited a year from the time it came out to see if if had problems.  Started taking it.  And im doing well with it.  I feel much healthier than when i was taking amaryl. On the negative side, As others have reported here on this newsgroup, i did tac on lbs when i started taking actos… although with exercise i have gotten them off. Lou – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text – Hi, Glucovance is actually a combination of Glucophage(Metformin) and Glyburide. I just saw my doctor today and had been taking 1000mg/day of Glucovance and he upped my dosage to 1500mg/day for two weeks then 2000mg/day if that doesn’t bring the BG down. I asked him about Actos and he said it is much more toxic to the liver than Glucovance and that you need to have your blood tested every 2 months for a year to make sure you’re not doing damage to your liver. Cheers, JS Hi all, I currently take Glucovance and Lipitor. I heard a story on the news about Actos which lowers BG and cholesterol. I was wondering if I could switch to actos and only have to take one medicine instead of two to accomplish the same thing? Actually Glucovance & Actos targets different areas in diabetes treatment. Glucovance is a combination drug of Glucophage (I forgot the actual compond name) & Glucoride.  Glucophage is used to restrict glucos production by the liver.  Glucoride stimulates the production of insulance by the pancreas. Actos resensitize the insulance reaction of the muscle & other tissues which has becomes desensitized (a major contributing cause of T2 diabetes). I personally am taking both Glucovance & Actos. — [ Rodrick Su       [                                                  ]

Lipitor handles a problem not addressed by any of the diabetic meds. If you have a prescription, treasure it, and run your life so as to allow you to keep taking it.  (easy on the alcohol, watch the Tylenol)   Lipitor and the other statin anti-cholesterol drugs are thought to prevent 1st heart attacks by a secondary effect on the arteries not part of their primary anti-cholesterol effect.  All diabetics, but especially Type 2’s are at increased risk for heart attacks.  You should be running your life as if you have already had a heart attack and are in recovery (A quote from my endo who quoted the research papers).   I am sure that Actos can improve your heart attack resistance by minimizing your insulin levels (unlike glucovance which boosts insulin levels).  I wouldn’t be at all surprised if the story you read reported that replacing glucovance with Actos helped.  But I would never abandon my Lipitor.   BTW: If your doc thought you needed Lipitor, then you probably also need over-the-counter Folic Acid and B6 to fight the homocysteine levels  Also BTW:  Our endo says blood pressures over 130/85 means take blood pressure pills.  When the doc said "diabetes", you automatically joined the pill-popping club.  Old Al (T1 since 94, 35 units H + U via 4 injections daily)  Arthrotec, Lipitor, Enalapril and lots of vitaminnies Posted Via Binaries.net = SPEED+RETENTION+COMPLETION = http://www.binaries.net
