ATKINS and PROZAC?

Question:

I understand some medications will work against the low-carb diets. Does anyone know if Prozac is one of them? Also, what about thyroid tablets (synthroid .3) and lipitor (20mg) for high cholestral? Any info appreciated.  I’m on my first low-carb day today.  Weight Watchers is NOT working for me…I love fruit and vegetables, and am alowed 5 fruits a day…which I can easily eat.  And carrots – I practically have been living on them.  I know, I know…almost total carbohydrates.  That is why I’m not losing on W. W.   Cheers, Allison

it was my experience while on Prozac that I actually GAINED 30 lbs in 6 months, even though Prozac in most people is to have a weight loss effect. Prozac has  to do with the seritonin receptors in your brain.  supposedly seritonin levels have to do with appetite suppression.  didn’t work for me :(  what has been your experience when it comes to Prozac and weight loss/gain if any? I have gained about 40 pounds on Prozac.  I can’t blame it all on Prozac because I have been binging for a few months…then started Weight Watchers, and because I am always hungry, ate carrots and fruit, etc. until it was coming out my ears…and haven’t lost anything.   In fact, I have gained 3 pounds. I am sure that Prozac adds to the difficulties of losing weight.  I am presently *slowly* going off Prozac, but have about another 2 months until I am completely off.  Incidently, I did not go on Prozac to lose weight, but for an anxiety disorder and possible "obsessive compulsive disorder," though my therapist is not too sure on that one.   I am still going on the Atkins low-carb, and I guess I’ll know in a couple of weeks if it will work with Prozac.   Anyone else with advice on this? I am currently taking Zoloft, which is in the Prozac family of SSRIs. I can’t say that I’ve had too much luck, unfortunately. I’ve been on this program for a month, and I haven’t noticed a difference, granted I haven’t measured inches or weighed. I think I would be able to tell a difference. It might not be the Zoloft, but I can’t talk to my doctor about it because she just blew the whole Atkins thing off… I hope it works for you! Keep us posted — I’m curious! Sounds exactly like me!  I have not lost weight yet, even though I have decreased my dosage over the last 8 months from 60 to 20 mg. I am new here, so could someone please fill me in about this diet? Prozac is mentioned in the Atkins book as one which can potentially interefere with weight loss.  My OB/GYN put me on the lowest dose (20 mg.) about 5 months ago for PMS and I have nothing but praise for it. He re-evaluated me last week and decided to keep me on for another 6 months.  I had a one week lapse where I didn’t take it (no refills and waiting to see MD) and basically had no weight loss, and this was concurrent with my first week of induction.  Went back on it a week ago and have since lost about 5 pounds.  So I guess it is different for everyone – but I would imagine the lower the dose the greater your chance for not having interference.  Just my 2 cents worth as I’m a real Prozac fan!!!!

I started Prozac in 1985, at which time I was about the slimmest I’ve been in my adult life (175 lbs.)  I lost about 5 lbs. the first month on Prozac without trying to lose, then started gaining.  I am now at 300.  I don’t necessarily blame the Prozac because my weight had a tendency to yo-yo even before I started taking it..
