Question:

Hi The doctor wants to switch medication. How fast does Metmorphin work? They say side effects are diarrhea and weight loss. Is this so? Do the side effects last long?

I was switched from Amaryl to Metformin.  It went to work immediately for me.  Had no side effects at all, and that was a miracle for me because most drugs seem to do a number on me.  I did not lose weight like they claimed I would.  I would be willing to bet that the weight loss they talk about is due to the stomach upset that it gives some people.  I DID lose weight while on it, but was also on a diet for weight loss.  My weight loss just seemed to slow a bit on the Metformin as compared to the Amaryl. — http://www.redshift.com/~juliebove/

Hi If metmorphin is Glucophage I never had the diarrhea or the weight loss. I did however have a decrease in appetite which helped me tremendously as I always ate too much before. The weight loss I have achieved came from hard work on a lower carbohydrate WOE because I can’t exercise. But YMMV and I sure hope it does as good for you as it did me. Hi, Metphormin used to upset me terribly. I would look at a favourite food and knew I couldn’t eat it. By pure accident, I discovered that by taking Ginseng regularly it reduced the side effects considerably. If you try it, be sure to monitor your bg levels as Ginseng lowers them as well. This in turn allowed me to drop one Metphormin tablet, which also helped. I had been taking this medication for about 6 years prior to that and 4 years later I still require the Ginseng to keep the symptoms to an acceptable level. By the way, my doctor laughed when I told him that Ginseng lowers blood sugar, but since then I have seen that tests have verified my findings. Dave

Hi I was on Glyburide from Nov 30th 2000 – Feb 20th 2001. I started on Glucophage (Metaformin) Feb 17th 2001.  I still have the runs

Poor you. and the weight loss the speak of is like 5 pounds a year from what I understand. (or it is from all the ‘runs’ IMO.)

It’s just not worth it as a weight loss drug. I miss the Glyburide.

The only reason we thought Metformin would be better than Glyburide is that we thought it was correcting more of the problem of insulin resistance and ot putting too much stress on the pancreas (fear of pancreas losing ability to mmake insulin) The Glyburide has worked wonders for me. Maybe a while on it will not cause a lot of damage. My husband calls it a miracle drug. It has stopped my severe diarrhea, most of my dry skin, reduced swelling in my legs and ankles, reduced blood pressure and I’ve lost 22 pounds since being diagnosed on February 23rd. It has brought down BG levels from 24.4 at diagnosis to consistently in the sevens and on three occasions in the past week to below 7. (Granted 6.6 and 6.7 is not a lot below 7 but still it thrilled me). I am now starting to think that my best bet is to stay on it until I can get off it and just manage by diet and exercise. So much to learn and "everyone is different" makes it *so* much harder. Thanks all for the input!   I fear my next HbA1C. My fingers are crossed for you. Vivienne

No I think you did it right. LOL I was being silly and oh I love Disney. I think that is why I am so angry over the Lipitor deal I read over the weekend. I was diagnosed diabetic almost three years ago. Well one week after diagnosis we went to Florida and I could not walk. I missed the whole trip. I was only on two meds and that was diabetes and Lipitor because I had not been sick other than the back disability that I have. When I seen that lipitor could be the cause of my pain I went off it. I noticed the two weeks after my surgery recently when I had no meds I felt really good and could walk and even do that straight and now I am on the meds again and lo and behold I can barely walk again from the pain. Well thanks for listening. I love this group. The support since I have been here a little over a year really is awesome. Not everyone suffers those side effects, for those who do it is usually short lived, some of course have to discontinue the drug.  I have noticed 2-3 weeks is the usual time it takes for it to start showing near normal readings of bg (based on family and acquaintances who were prescribed).

You probably mean metformin???  Took me about two three weeks to get right doages and schdule.  Sikde-effects went away eventually.  Sorry, but I didn’t lose any weight to speak of…just spoent a lot of time thinking about redecorating my bathroom.  Gene
