Plateau Broken, concerns…..

Question:

I didn’t realize that all the different anti-depressants the docs had me on (Prozac, Paxil, Zoloft, Wellbutrin, Effexor and finally, Parnate) could contribute to weight gain until I’d ballooned up to 248 and felt *really* miserable. One of the reasons I quit taking the Parnate on my own was because I couldn’t do a lc woe while on it–any of the aged cheeses (among other things) are extremely dangerous when taking an MAOI, such as Parnate, and could lead to stroke or heart attack. In any event, I quit taking the Parnate on my own and started taking St. John’s Wort, along with my other daily supplements. I can’t speak for anyone but myself, but between the SJW and my losing weight, I feel better than I have at any time during the last 6+ years of being overweight and taking all those other drugs. Hi all,  I just came off two type of medication that I gained weight on, Zoloft (for depression which no longer seems to exist ;-) ,

Just to be sure that Harriet (aka Gypsy Girl) gets all the credit, I think the above tag line was an accident:

So I cut down the calories.  But, what i do is keep the number varied. Somedays I come in at 1200, some days at 1800, I’m trying to average 1600, which is 10x my goal weight.  I figure if I keep varying the number, my metabolism won’t have a chance to go into stuck mode.

This is what I do as well. I also try to factor in the amount of exercise I do on a given day. — < ——  PLEASE NOTE:  USING SPAM MASK  —— < — Remove the Z from my address to respond —

Hi all,  I just came off two type of medication that I gained weight on, Zoloft (for depression which no longer seems to exist ;-) , and Norvasc, for hypertension which also no longer seems to exist ;-) . The side effects for both can be weight gain, and since I put on 40+ lbs after going on one then the other, I’m waiting to see what happens as to my incredibly slow weight loss, now that I’m off them. What I don’t understand, however, is what mechanism is messed around with that causes the weight gain? For the first few days off meds, I was ravenously hungry, all the time.  In fact, I felt hypoglycemic for the first time in the months I’ve been lo-carbing….I mean seriously hypglycemic.  That seems to be abating now…it’s been about 10 days…and the scale is flip-flopping wildly, but that could be because I’m just back from a mini vacation, during which I made a conscious decision to stop the diet, knowing that I would be back on an Induction/Phase I plan when I came back. I must not have done too much damage, since my energy level is still high, my mood is still great, and I didn’t have any sugar craving yesterday, although I did have a headache last night (mild carb withdrawal).   Anyway, pardon the rambling, but I needed to check in with this stuff. Thanks for the feedback. I was completely surprised when I learned how many calories I was actually consuming. The 10x goal weight formula seems very logical. And I agree that a daily variance on actually calories consumed may help to prevent starvation mode. That is something I would not have thought of! Thanks! Ali 245/183/150

Hi Ali– I don’t have the answer to your question– my body, my science experiment- I understand your frustration– boy do I ever… It appears to me that the only time I lose weight is when I go on a meat a water fast– so you are doing better than I am by eating all those green things— In the bak of my mind I know I stuck around this area of weight for awhile and so I think that is why it is so hard to get under it– but once we get past this plateau area then the loss from 230 to 210 should be pretty good again.   so– one thing is I find that when I up my calories  and keep carbs about 20– I maintain and not lose– and that is good to know– lets me know How I will maintain  for the long run…. there are those who swear by high calorie loss-  but I am not one of them— oh I wish I was– and who knows my body might decide to switch yet— so far I am thrilled to have lost nearly 50 pounds– and not gained!! Hi Ali– I don’t have the answer to your question– my body, my science experiment-

Hello! I like that phrase, "my body, my science experiment;  :) I understand your frustration– boy do I ever… It appears to me that the only time I lose weight is when I go on a meat a water fast– so you are doing better than I am by eating all those green things— In the bak of my mind I know I stuck around this area of weight for awhile and so I think that is why it is so hard to get under it– but once we get past this plateau area then the loss from 230 to 210 should be pretty good again.

Thats the spirit!!! I believe that perhaps  my plateau would have ended on its own, without the reduced cals, etc. With this wedding coming up, I just kept seeing the wedding album, with me in all my chubby glory :) I am a bit impatient. so– one thing is I find that when I up my calories  and keep carbs about 20– I maintain and not lose– and that is good to know– lets me know How I will maintain  for the long run….

Yes, I agree. And the WOE at that level is very livable for the long term, IMO. there are those who swear by high calorie loss-  but I am not one of them— oh I wish I was– and who knows my body might decide to switch yet— so far I am thrilled to have lost nearly 50 pounds– and not gained!!

49lbs is awsome!! Thanks for the support! Ali 245/183/150 – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text -Richie 283/234/165 ( 1 pound from 50)

Lurking mode off… Hello! I am a LC veteran, so to speak, having lost a total of 62 lbs so far. I re-started this WOE after a 6 month lapse in April 98. I promptly lost 23lbs, and stalled at 195 lbs. I broke that stall by carbing it up for a couple of days, and going back to induction levels. I got down to 190lbs, and stalled again for 2 months, bouncing back and forth between 188-190lbs. During that time, I stayed at less than 20g carbs, and exercized 3x per week. Now, after reevaluating my eating habits, and due to the fact that I have a huge wedding to attend in early October, I decided to do what ever it took to break my stall. First, I increased by water from 64oz per day to over 95oz. I pee all day long. I increased my exercize to 6x per week. 35 mins of any cardio that gets my heart rate up, and 30 mins of toning/weight training And now the part that concerns me, I have cut my calories back to 1200-1300 per day. After eating fat/cals no holds barred,   I realized, with the help of the DietWatch program that I must have been consuming 2100-2500cals per day. I felt that I had to try counting calories, and just see what would happen. My current carb level is 12-15g per day, and I am sure to always include 1 1/2-2 cups of romaine lettuce, and 1/2 cup broccoli, grean beans, or some sort of LC veggie, a double dose of multi-vitamins, and I stack 2x per day, 5days per week. (the stack I added bout 3 weeks ago). I have been at this calorie/exercize level for 1 week. Oh yes, I also cut out diet coke about 3 weeks ago. Since starting this, I have lost a lb a day! I feel like its "the old days" again when I first started Atkins and the first 35lbs "melted" off. My main concern is that my body will go into "starvation mode" and I will stall out again, and after eating so few calories per day, my weight will jump up. I am so enjoying  the weight loss (and muscle increase, with the weight training), that I dont want to stop! I feel great, and I have lots of energy. Has anyone out there tried counting calories as well as carbs? Will staying at 1200 cals hurt me in the long run? Ali 245/183/150
