can oral meth. or prednisone cause gastirtis?

Question:

Nan – Talk to your doctor about Prilosec (omeprazole) – commonly prescribed to treat active gastric ulcers. Toni – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text – I have developed severe gastritis from my two years on NSAIDS.  I am off all of them now and even though the gastritis is somewhat better, it is still bad during the night.   I am wondering if oral meth. contributes to this. Would I be better off taking the injectable?  Also, does pred. aggravate this as well? I seem to be ok during the day but in the middle of the night I awaken with terrible pain in the center, lower abdomen.  It is even sore to the touch. I have to get up, move around, take gaviscon, and sleep upright (not terribly comfortable).  Any advice would be appreciated.  I have the elevated bed, no food after 6 pm, and all the other dictates down pat.  Still, I have this problem. It has been about three weeks off the NSAIDS, so it may just be a matter of time, hope so.  Does anyone know if there is anything available to get relief from this?   Thanks. As always, you guys are a Godsend! Nan

Response:

I developed severe gastritis after 7 yrs on NSAIDS, actually had for longer but no one took me seriously until I saw a GE.  Yes, pred. can also aggravate gastritis, don’t have any experience with meth.  If your pain doesn’t start improving soon, I’d recommend you see a GE.  It took one year to get my stomach under control.  Hope you feel better soon.  Marj Hartlady14 wrote – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text –  I have developed severe gastritis from my two years on NSAIDS.  I am off all of them now and even though the gastritis is somewhat better, it is still bad during the night.   I am wondering if oral meth. contributes to this. I had that problem after being on NSAIDs for 7 or 8 years.  Now I take 900 mg of Cimetidine (prescription level dosages of Tagamet) every night before going to bed.  I’ve been doing that for about 12 years.  I can certainly understand the pain that you are feeling.  It wasn’t very much ‘fun’ at all! I hope that you aren’t drinking ANYTHING with caffeine in it.  No coffee, tea, or colas.  I feel great now, but can’t drink any coffee or colas although I can currently drink 2 cups of tea each day.  The effect of the caffeine on me is delayed so that if I drink a cup of coffee today I won’t feel the effects until tomorrow, but when I do feel it it will be severe.  Because of the delayed effect, it took me a long time to make the connection.  There are probably a lot of other foods to avoid, especially in your condition. I wasn’t aware of any connection with the methotrexate that I was taking, and that I continue to take.  But that doesn’t mean that there isn’t any.  A quick look at www.rxlist.com did indicate possible side-effects of "gastrointestinal ulceration and bleeding".  It also said that side-effect are generally dose related, and I’ve never been able to figure how that relates to the dosages of methotrexate that we take for arthritis, versus the dosages taken as an anti-cancer drug. I don’t know that I have any suggestions other than what you are doing.  I was literally drinking bottles of antacids!  Are you taking any of the drugs like Tagamet?  I do get the impression that much of the recovery process is ‘just a matter of time’, but it didn’t seem like it took 3 weeks for me. Below, are the potential gastrointestinal side-effects of prednisone that was listed on one website: Gastrointestinal: Peptic ulcer with possible perforation; hemorrhage, Pancreatitis, Abdominal distention, Ulcerative esophagitis That sounds like prednisone could possibly be complicating your problems. (From my experience with prednisone, it might be possible that the effects of prednisone-withdrawal could be just as bad.) Best wishes for a speedy recovery, Rick G(in CA)

I take prevacid and propulsid and they do control the reflux but I think that this is an inflammation from the two years of relafin.  My doc called me this morning and suggested that I try Mylanta II as it coats and provides a barier so that my nights might be a little easier.  Thanks for answering my query! Hi Nan,      I developed acute gastritis from oral MTX. So severe, had to stop MTX (wasn’t woking anyway). Prednisone also can cause gastritis. Have you had an endoscopy? Where they look down your throat and into your stomach with a light and a little camera? Maybe you should ask your doc about having this done, You get great color glossies of your stomach! Gastritis looks like you have the measles inside your tummy! Hope your tummy gets better! Gloria Baswell

Pred can do it Nan. Thats why I still have to take my prevacid and get scoped once a year even tho I don’t take NSAIDS.
