Hello all, My name is Tony, I was diagnosed with IBS about a year ago and have had an incredibly hard time dealing with the symptoms… I have regular bloated feelings….lower abdominal pain and I always feel like I need to push my gut around to keep things moving…. I have to take Prevacid due to the increased sensitivity to my own stomach acids…. I also take propulsid because the doctors say I have a delay in my gastric emptying. I have suffered anxiety attacks and even ended up in the hospital because of it…. I always think the worst when my symptoms flare up… I think…"What if I have Cancer…."  "Am I going to die"  Sometimes my pain is so bad …it radiates into my chest and i feel like I am having a heart attack…Car rides and anything that moves for a period of time makes my symptoms flare up….. My bowel movements are always like ribbons and I never feel like I have a complete movement…. Do any of you experience these types of symptoms?  I think I might need to see a shrink for my obvious inability to cope sometimes…. I am only 29 years old and can’t believe what a change this thing has had on my life…..  Any advice would be greatly appreciated… Thanks for listening.. Happy Holidays…

Hi Tony,  welcome to our wonderful world of IBS.  I have had IBS for 11 yrs now.  I did see a shrink and he put me on xanax to help with my panic attacks and it does help with my IBS.  You did not write what changes you have made to your diet, lifestyle etc… Tell me what changes you have made maybe we can go from there OK? Quite honestly I doubt if a "shrink" is what you need – something along the lines of Alcoholics Anonymous would be a lot more use if only it existed for ibs. But it doesn’t (so far as I know) :-( This newsgroup has been a great help for me, and so have various other newsgroups (where I _don’t_ talk about ibs!). You might be able to find a real-life self-help group, perhaps connected to a medical practice or to a church. Best wishes, Joyce. —

My doctors call it situational depression. The depression comes on when I go through my bouts with the IBS. When the IBS is gone, so is the depression. The object is to cut down on the bouts, but I haven’t found a way to do that as yet. I believe that most of us have the same or similar feelings as you. It is uncomfortable, and sometimes the pain can be more than we can take. And as some one else posted earlier, if there was a 12 step program for IBS, I would also join it. However, I do take it one day at a time.

I answered:

On further thought: I assume a qualified doctor made the diagnosis of IBS. There are medicines he could have prescribed to ease your symptoms while the cause of the IBS was being investigated. A lot of remedies are discussed on this newsgroup. The cause of the IBS might be something like a virus, or bad eating habits. (So far as I know, no one has isolated a single cause behind all cases of IBS.) If on the other hand, the main cause of your IBS is stress, then it is likely that you will need some kind of help in sorting out what it is that is stressing you. If (perhaps) you are trying to wring 26 hours of productive work from every day, what is driving you? Look first for relief from the pain. No one can think properly when in constant pain. Then look for the cause of the pain. If you were abused by someone who should have cared for you, or bullied by someone who should have been your friend, you may be unable to face the memory alone. (Or you may be able to face it after you have screamed defiance into the wind … people vary.) I hope this is more helpful than my previous post. Joyce. —
