Hiatal Hernia.

Question:

Anyone have problems with theirs? I was told I had a small one with my first endoscopy years ago and I never really had any probelms until about a week ago I was sitting and got up and twisted wrong and I thought I was gonna die,. tell me if this may be the right spot. Right where V is in between your left and right ribcage. Also since then I have been taking a lot of air in  while eating or drinking and acid reflux is there which wasnt there before. still hurts like the dickens. Like i tore some cartlidge or a muscle. thats what it feels like, real sore. The only time I aggravate it is when I sneeze or turn the wrong way. This sound about right? Tazz Reply to Tazz reply to

Bingo. Sometime I can gently press up under my ribs, cause a burp and kind of push it out.  Of course I cannot recommend this as you might injure yourself. Your Dr. will probably put you on propulsid to settle it down. As far as gerd or reflux is concerned,  prescription Previcid works wonders for me. One pill once a day (or 1 every 12 hrs if things are bad) and no burning. You still can get reflux,  but it does not burn the sap out of your esophagus. BTW do not ignore it as they now say uncontrolled reflux can increase your chance of esophagus cancer by as much as 40%.  In the home remedy zone,  don’t eat after about 6:00 PM and put 2 2×4’s under your headboard.  The slight slant alleviates allot of those wake up refluxing attacks. Some of this info might not apply to your current problem,  but I was on a roll and figured I would purge my gut wrenching file.  Hope you get it fixed fast! KJ

Tazz, I’ve had a hiata hernia for many years.  I have a bad one.  Every few years I have to go to the gastrointerologist and have my esophagus dilated. I’ve taken Prilosec for years, one 20mg capsule per day.  I’ve tried other stuff such as Pepcid and even other prescription medicine for it and nothing works as well for me as Prilosec. I was told that surgery to correct a hiata hernia is very risky and most of the time the surgery doesn’t help and can make matters worse.  It’s big time major surgery.  I’m not going to have it done……I’ll just put up with the discomfort and keep on taking Prilosec. Good luck to you.

Hello all, I have been reading these posts and I knew that there had to be others out there that understood what life is like with chronic pain. I had a Hiatal Hernia for years and about 2 1/2 years ago it seemed to get increasingly worse. I was taking pepcid and prilosec along with about 15-20 tums to try and get some relief. After about 3 days of increasing discomfort I figured something was wrong and made an appointment with the DR for the next day. I was awakened at 5am that morning by incredible pain which was focused in the "V" area of the ribcage but was radiating through my back. I tried to get to the hospital but since I was living alone I had to drive myself. I got about 1/2 way there when I started to black out. I called *999 on my cell phone and was found by the ambulance laying on the ground outside my car by the side of the road. It turns out that had Pancreatitis and even though I was in the hospital, it was just the beginning of the hell I have been dealing with ever since. At the moment I have Chronic Recurrent Pancreatitis and I still have yet to find a DR that will help me with the pain. I have been through numerous doctors and hospitals. I found that the Mayo clinic was a complete waste of time after 6 trips there. It has come down to getting pain relief wherever I can. Luckily I now a few people that have been able to help me with meds but if it ever came to it then I would go to street drugs or suicide. I am sorry to babble on this long but I have so much pent up anger and anxiety that I have a hard time getting things straight. Thanks for allowing me to bend your monitors :       Gary
