New Doctor Visit – not going so good

Question:

Well, I went to the new PCP today.  She is an internist, instead of the GP that I had been seeing.  She did a fairly good exam and asked a lot of background questions.  So far so good. We got talking about my respiratory symptoms – fever, cough, etc.  She said it is probably allergy related (I started getting that "feeling" again).  I asked if it is allergy, why do I still have a fever – since December?? "Don’t know".  "Here, try this Flonase and Liquibid".  I told her I have already done the Liquibid.  Try it again anyway.  "How are you sleeping?"  I told her I wake up around 1am, and cannot get back to sleep.  A few more pokes and jabs, question this question that……  "I think you might have Fibromyalga".  Ok, what do we do about it?  "Up your Celexa to the max dose – 40mg".  Ok….  "Your coughing might be from reflux".  (I take Prevacid currently for it).  "Let’s change it to Priolsec".  Ok…..  I told her that it didn’t matter if I was lying down or standing up, I still am coughing and coughing up junk.  "Let’s just try this". Now, begin my back pain (big mistake)…..  Long story short, she would not give me anything to try, or offer any other advise.  "Physical therapy" – done that.  "Celebrex" – on that.  In fact, I am already taking 2x the dose that she would have prescribed.  I asked about a different pain med.  "We only treat backs with anti-inflamitories".  Now I knew I was in trouble.  I asked again, telling her what has and has not worked in the past.  "No, just take the Celebrex".  She said she would refer me to a neurosurgeon, but that she would need to evaluate everything first. I forgot to mention that when they took my B/P when I got there, it was up 163/118.  She took it again at the end of my appointment and it was still up 162/117!!!!!!  Now she wants me to come back in 1 week to check my B/P and see about B/P meds.  I don’t want another problem!!!  I want this chest thing diagnosed if not fixed.  I want pain meds that will help me be sane!!!!! I am soooo frustrated.  I go back to my regular P.M. Friday.  I was going to tell him to change my meds or I am leaving, but now I don’t think I should. He is at least giving me something (Lortab 10), even if it isn’t helping anymore.  I am worried that I will get in a position where he won’t prescribe me meds and I won’t have a new doctor.  No human should be made to go through this!! Amy

Response:

Amy, I am sorry that dumb doctor’s always think inflammatory drugs work best. You need to keep looking Amy.  I got no where until I found this wonderful doc and he gave me the Duragesic patch it has taken all my pain away.  I know finding a doc is hard but if you look at this way you would not go to the store and pick up banana’s if you did not like them but you would choose your favorite fruit.  Doc’s are the same way you just keep picking until you find the right doc.  I finally found the doc that understood and seemed to want to help me.  Doctors are a dime a dozen there are so many to pick and choose from.  I wish you the best of luck in your search Take Care Linda

Amy,      This is not a human being in that Dr. Jacket you saw today. She did show some signs of life in her arrogance, intolerance of opoids, and total dis-regard for your input. As to any of the qualities that exist in a person worth doing business with, she struck out. How fast can you say " I won’t be back " She dismissed your very real concern of a + 4 month fever , and all your other symptoms by prescribing the same meds that have already failed. Do not take her seriously. Can you escape her clutches easily or do you have to force a referral? At least your PC can keep you from withdrawal with his Lortab, until you find *your* Dr. Then you can dump the entire bunch of them. What area of the country are you in, as in closest big city?  Please hang in there; you will get help! Peace,     Richard

No human should be made to – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text – go through this!! Amy

I almost thought you was going to say thats all he cared about was what type of insurance is paying for this visit so I know how much and how fast I’ll be getting paid. Doug – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text – I understand exactly how you feel.  I remember once going to the doctor with a terrible earache, and the only thing that he seemed concerned with was that my skin looked dry! Well, it does seem that everyone in my family was quite disappointed.  I can understand not having an answer, but I would have at least liked to have her venture a guess.  And as far as my back, well, that went totally no where. I go Friday to my pain management doctor.  I already know that he is going to be ticked that I am not over this "thing" yet so he can do another round of injections.  I have put my paperwork from this weeks doctor in my purse so he can see that I am trying to do everything I can to get well.  Next week is going to be a very long week for me, and if I come home WITHOUT any new meds for my back, I think I will lose it.  Wish me luck. And Richard, hope that pump is doing good.  We missed you while you were gone. Amy
