Its quite allright, don’t worry about the errors….this Rheumy, i have seen her only twice, she’s very temperamental and curt, and doesn’t listen very well before she responds…i plan on calling her with my side effects, but before i did that i wanted to get some evidence from somewhere in the literature about tiredness and plaquenil, which someone else did send me a link stating that…i just didn’t want it to be dismissed..usually drs. tell me, oh no, that can’t cause that!…i am one to have have had the side effects that are listed as .001% of the population get…my body is very sensitive to meds, always have been…so with the Plaquenil, i have had unsual fatigue and tiredness, gas and sore throat the last two days….the fatigue bothers me the most…..Pebs

Hi Pebs, I have a question for you. Pardon me if I have missed something. Why are you on the plaquinel? I didn’t know that it was helpful for treating CFS and FM. I have to ask because I don’t know if that is true. It may be a good choice to go off it, since you are getting so many side effects. Also, I wondered if there is another rheumy you could see, as the one you have now sounds like such a dweeb. I know one doesn’t always have a choice. I live near a small city where there are very few in that specialty. Regards, BJ "Pebs" <pebbbl…@hotmail.com

I agree with you BJ….plaquenil is noted for lupus treatment, particularly skin and joints as well as fatigue….but not for FMS or other auto immune problems….maybe you should change your rheumatologist for someone more openly communicative who you feel comfortable with? Hi Shelagh, There you are again. This is soooo nice. It sounds like you are doing reasonably well. I am thinking now of your posts about fishing and skating. Do you have any major organ involement with your lupus? I know that you have mentioned vasculitis and Raynauds. I hope you don’t mind my asking. I also wondered what drugs you are on. Whatever it is, I want some. I am a driven type, but don’t have much strength to do a lot. I walk my dogs and do yoga and stretching excercises. Oh yes, I do laugh a lot; mostly at myself. I don’t see where you look stupid. No one cares about spelling or grammar here. unless we just feel like teasing each other and then it’s all known to be in fun. Not critical. I am concerned about two things. I have never heard of plaquenil causing fatigue. Though as with any drug, virtually any reaction is possible. So Pebs needs to take that into consideration. She may want to try a different manufacturer. And it may just be the course of her current flare. The other thing is you said you got in trouble by asking about other patients… was he upset that you were trying to get information *for* Pebs or does he think that talking to other patients will somehow steer you wrong in *your* treatment? Either way, I think he’s wrong. And I don’t think you should feel like you can’t ask your doctor a perfectly acceptable question. Can plaquenil cause fatigue? Doc’s answer should be "yes", "no", or" maybe" but not a chastisement of your request for info. MNSHO
Response:
I am concerned about two things. I have never heard of plaquenil causing fatigue.
He told it can cause "terrible fatigue" but that most likely would be an adverse reaction and that person needed to tell their doctor immediately, not wait it out. He also said there could be a problem with some other medication that with the plaquenil could be causing the problem, and again, that person needs to get help immediately. He told me that sometimes people are taking things they do not tell their doctor. Gave me that look when he said it, I am not taking anything. cripes.
The other thing is you said you got in trouble by asking about other patients… was he upset that you were trying to get information *for* Pebs or does he think that talking to
I don’t know, he got a little funky. I thought maybe he was having a bad day. I go for cytoxan four times a week and usually we talk about anything. He knows I don’t like the cytoxan or what it feels like, but if I have to do it I want to go to oral, but he doesn’t. The nurses at the hospitla are the ones who wanted me to join this group, and put me in the suppport group at the hospital. I think they were more concerned over my depression when my sister died. It is still veyr new and I think depression is natural for some time. I don’t know that he thinks talking to others help, but he does’t have it either.

the plaquenil is the only new meds i introduced into my system…maybe its reacting with one of my other meds…btw, about
Pebs I asked my doctor about your plaquenil today. He said that it can cause terrible fatigue, not to take it at the same time as an antacid. He said it "might" get better with time. I hate when he tells me "mights", but that’s what he said anyway. Lucy

Just thought I’d mention (in case it hasn’t been…don’t have time right now to go through the whole string of posts) that Plaquenil is a mild stimulant. Thus it’s usually somewhat helpful with lupus fatigue. BTW, fatigue is very commonly associated with lupus. It’s one of the first signs in my daughter of a new-onset flareup. Sandra

Hi Pebs, I was on plaquenil at one time and do not remember it making me more tired. You just started the drug a few days ago so I think that is NOT the reason you are feeling that way. Maybe something else is causing it. It takes a good 6weeks or more to get the plaquenil in your system and see effects that help. So hang in there and it may just help you. janers
I’m on Plaquenil now and have felt less tired since about 3 months after starting it. No side effects that I can identify. And a year after starting Plaquenil, I can get by with insufficient sleep without getting sick, and I almost never have joint pain anymore.

Hi Pebs, I have absolutely no input on this subject. I do know that it takes a long time for Imuran to start working, so I assume it is the same for Plaquinil. Actually I was thinking about you for the last couple of days. It has been a while since I saw you post, so I was just planning to inquire tonight about you. So you see, I really just used this as an excuss to say hello. I am sorry that you are feeling tired and achy, but I am glad that we heard from you just the same. Regards, BJ "Pebs" <pebbbl…@hotmail.com
